JewsNews March 2005

Hi Jewbrofans!

Hershal Jewsbro here ... happy to report that The Jews Brothers Band is soon taking off for Oystraylia where we will play the Blue Mountain Festival as well as several clubs in Sydney, listed below.
It's been three years now since our last trip to Aussie and it's long overdue. We miss the dear little kangaroos, wombats and koalas who love our music and it will be nice to pet them again.

We will also give you a glimpse below of our planned onslaught on Europe in July-August, but first ...

Linn Lorkin, the JBB's fabulous chanteuse, is doing a solo performance of her kiwiana songs at the legendary Bunker -- the Devonport Folk Club -- on Mt. Victoria on Sunday 6th March at 8pm.

She will be playing piano and singing all her songs about life in New Zealand, from Family at the Beach, to I Should be a Star in Las Vegas (but tonight I'm sleeping in Grey Lynn) to her new K. Rd. Song, I'm So Happy on Karangahape Rd. Plus, the first Auckland performance of The Jews Brothers Band on Their South Island Tour, all about life as a touring Hobo Jewsbro -- well, Jewsis actually -- which has up till now only been sung ... in the South Island!. There will be songs from all of her albums, which will be on sale on the night -- bring your favourite pen and she'll sign them for you.

And if you're too far away, such a shame! Never mind -- all of her CDs are available online at the Rouge Records website: www.rouge.co.nz.

To get to the Bunker, go down Lake Rd from Takapuna. Make a right at the roundabout immediately before the shops in Devonport, turn left onto Kerr St. and then an immediate sharp left up the mountain. Follow your nose till you get to the summit car park and then it's a short walk down the path to the Bunker.

If you've never been, it's a real experience: an actual World War II bunker with great acoustics and ambience. It's ten bucks to get in to hear Linn and bookings can make the difference: the number is 09 445 2227

For those of you in New Zealand, WOMAD Taranaki is coming up on the weekend of March 11, 12 and 13. Though the JBB will not be there -- they don't repeat acts twice in a row -- most of us Jewsbros are actually going to be there. Nigel Gavin and Peter Scott will be performing with Bravura and Linn and Hersh are going to serve as translators and presenters for some of the acts' performances or workshops.

We are very interested in hearing Lo'jo again and, for the first time, the French Jewish/Gypsy group Les Yeux Noirs.

Those of you who were fortunate enough to have been at the previous Taranaki WOMAD will know how wonderful this event is. Of course it will all be different performers and groups this time and you never know what to expect -- but hey, that's part of the fun. Believe me, for what you pay for a ticket, it is very well worth it! Not to mention the fabulous Brooklands setting which when you see it for the first time, will take your breath away!

So if you come down, (or UP to it) see if you can spot some of the Jewsbros and don't be shy, say hi!

Lots of info on their website: www.womad.co.nz

The Jews Brothers Band are planning their next trip to the UK and Europe. It seems that this is becoming a tradition by now. So far the band has been booked into the great Broadstairs Folkweek which is a very cool festival.

We will also be returning to the clubs where we played last year such as The Spitz and by mid April we should have a schedule set that would include other festivals and a club circuit around the Yiddish Isles, uuuuuhhhh, 'scoose me, that's BRITISH Isles. Keep tuned to these pages.

Now, for your favourite part of the newsletter, have a laugh on us:

During the winter of 1926, Thelma Goldstein from Chicago treated herself to her first real vacation in Florida. Being unfamiliar with the area, she wandered into a hotel in North Miami. "Excuse me," she said to the manager. "My name is Mrs. Goldstein, and I'd like a small room for two weeks."

"I'm awfully sorry," he replied, "but all of our rooms are occupied." Just as he said that, a man came down and checked out.

"What luck," said Mrs. Goldstein. "Now there's a room."

"Not so fast, madam. I'm sorry, but this hotel is restricted. No Jews allowed."

"Jewish? Who's Jewish? I happen to be Catholic."

"I find that hard to believe. Let me ask you, who was the son of God?"

"Jesus, son of Mary."

"Where was he born?"

"In a stable."

"And why was he born in a stable?"

"Because a schmuck like you wouldn't let a Jew rent a room in his hotel."

Oy!

And here's a Jewish haiku from our special correspondent in Tokyo the Rabbi Roshi Jubu for you to meditate on:

Be here now
Be someplace else later
Is that so complicated?

Oy!
